Butterfly Effect
State of confusion : Normally we see lot of butterflies after the rainy season is over. We admire the colour and beauty of butterflies but have we ever thought of the effects caused due to fluttering of wings by butterflies. The term chaos means a state of confusion. The chaos theory describes the position about the lack of order in a system. This theory describes the position which obeys no laws or rules. The important point about chaos theory is that even very simple and small systems may cause complex behavior or events, in the same or different place. Lorenz loved the study of weather. He only first coined the term Butterfly effect that illustrates the idea of chaos theory.
Weather predictions : Lorenz was working on weather predictions. He was doing experiment to model the weather by combining mathematics and meteorology but weather prediction is extremely a tough task. He tried to set out a set of differential equations to note the change of temperature, pressure and wind velocity. The meteorologists normally do weather predictions but they could do it for a short period only. Lorenz stated that if chaos theory predictions are true, a single flap of a single seagull’s wings would be enough to change the future weather systems, anywhere on the earth. He predicted and developed his thoughts that flap of butterfly’s wings in Brazil may be the reason for the tornado in Texas. The Butterfly effect states that impossible predictions are possible.
Chaos theory : One day, Lorenz while working on the model for predicting weather, instead of starting from the beginning, restarted from the middle. He was astonished to note that the data matched exactly with the data of the first run initially but there was a drastic change afterwards. The chaos theory clarifies that interactions between the complex systems is the result of randomness and lack of order. The chaos theory is a revolution of ideas. The ideas make impact on any unrelated matters. The chaos theory describes the disordered condition and trying to find the underlying order in apparently random data. This gave the idea about butterfly effect to Lorenz.
What is butterfly effect : In simple terms, we could state that depending upon the initial conditions, the sensitive dependence happens afterwards. If there is a small change in the initial condition, there is a possibility of a large variation in the long term behavior. The butterfly effect means that the tender wings of butterfly may change the path of tornado and the atmospheric conditions may change due to this effect. The effect of tornado may get delayed or accelerated or prevented or diverted due to butterfly effect. So, we could conclude that the flapping wings of a butterfly is the small change in the initial condition that leads to chain of events and end with bigger changes afterwards. Suppose if the butterfly had not flapped its wings, the chain of events might not have happened. Actually, the butterfly is not at all responsible for the happening of any event. But, butterfly could influence for the happening of events in a chaotic manner. Still research is going on to study the behavior of sensitivity and its impact on weather patterns, based on butterfly effect.
